NIRF 2017 to 2021 Rankings – A Complete Guide to Data Visualization using Microsoft Power BI

NIRF 2021 Rankings – Data Visualization using Microsoft Power BI

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by Minister of HRD on 29th September 2015.
This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions.
The parameters or criteria broadly cover the following:

  • Teaching, Learning and Resources
  • Research and Professional Practices
  • Graduation Outcomes
  • Outreach and Inclusivity and
  • Perception

This Ranking is considered to be a very prestigious to benchmark with the institutions nationwide.

NIRF  ranking has redefined the rankings unlike those are offered by any media to the educational institutions in the country in recent times, proving it to be  more authenticated and reliable.

The data for visualization is obtained from the following KAGGLE source;

Data Preparation & Cleaning

  • Load the Data (CSV Files) using Power query
  • Click Transform Data (Power Query) – Convert Column Year in the Text Format into Date for each query
    • Go to Home Menu – Data type: Date, Close and apply.
    • We are doing this so as to create a YoY% Measure and Date Table in the Model.
  • Go to Data Tab – Menu – Add Date Table
    • Use the following code
    • Date Table = CALENDARAUTO()
    • This function automatically updates the date depending on the date field in the dataset

Connect the data model – Date Table to all the dataset in the model – Create Relationships

Implications from the report

  • This report is an attempt to recreate the visuals and rankings published by the NIRF authorities.
  • Overall Report indicates that IITs and IIMs Tops the table in most cases with thorough concentration on the Intellectual Capital, Research acumen, Branding, Perception and various other metrics. YoY% indicates the scores compared to Previous years. Top 20 ranked institutes are formatted in green
  • Engineering Report shows the rankings among institutes, among the parameters IIT Madras tops the table, however there are few other Non-IITs competing at a close range.
  • AIIMS, Christian Medical College and Amirtha Vishwa Vidyapeetham being the front runners in the Medical Category.
  • IISC, JNU tops the table in Universities Category with an impeccable score of 100 in Perception for IISc and Graduation Outcome for Banaras Hindu University.
  • IIMs and IITs are the leaders in the Management category. IIM Bangalore having an impressive score of 100 in Perception.
  • In the Colleges Ranking, Miranda House has bagged first place with an overall score of 75.42. Rank 2 and 3 have been secured by Lady Shri Ram College For Women (69.44 scores) and Loyola College (69.28 scores)
  • Among all the states there is a high level of participation found among the institutes from Tamilnadu.

Conclusion: Institutes must realise and come out of their inhibitions that building a brand is way possible ONLY by delivering quality education, enhancing, upskilling and support the faculty team to grow together. This Ranking is a wakeup call to the barons of education to benchmark themselves to not with Indian entities but with Internationally accredited institutes.

Educational Institutes must showcase their exemplary performance in On Field Excellence rather than being an expert in Inspection Documentation.

Mushrooming of institutions and their multi faceted styles may overkill the efficiency of the resources and scaling up of operations. Focus on their core function of value enhancement for their customers (students), avoid working as a profit centres and concentrate on the sustainable growth to secure their future.
